Meet the Oncology Team
Dr. Amanda FulmerAmanda is an Arkansas native who received her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from the University of Arkansas. She then obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. After completing an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, she returned to LSU to complete a three-year Medical Oncology residency and became board certified in 2008. She practiced Oncology in northern Virginia before joining VEC as Richmond's first veterinary oncologist. Her special interests include pain management in cancer patients, histiocytic neoplasia, and palliative treatment for end-stage patients. In her spare time, Amanda enjoys reading, fishing, and spending time with her family (both human and animal). Dr. Fulmer integrates all aspects of cancer treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and alternative therapies.
Charlene FerrellOncology Assistant
Charlene has worked at the VESC for over 2 years, most currently in oncology. She loves working with oncology patients because "we are providing a service that allows owners to have more quality time with their pets who have been diagnosed with cancer. What we do is very bittersweet, but I enjoy being a part of a team who truly cares about and is fully dedicated to the well being and quality of life for our patients." Charlene graduated with a B.A. from VCU in 2008 and is currently attending school part time to fulfill pre-requisite requirements to apply to veterinary school. In her free time, she enjoys music, experiencing new places, and just hanging out with her fiance', Matt, and their two "children", Pacey and Sidney.
Sonja Hegeman Oncology LVT
Sonja graduated from Virginia Tech in 2000 with a B.S. in Wildlife Science and afterwards decided to go back to school and attend the veterinary technology program at Blue Ridge Community College. One thing she loves about veterinary technology is there are so many different things you can do. She has worked in a variety of settings, such as a spay/neuter clinic, a wildlife rehabilitation center, private practice, and emergency centers. The Veterinary Emergency & Specialty is excited to have Sonja on our team since November 2010. Sonja feels blessed to join the oncology team in December 2011 where she truly feels at home here. “I cannot imagine a more important role that I could play than helping clients to spend more time with their pets that they so dearly love”. In her spare time she loves to run and just ran in her second marathon in April, The Charlottesville Marathon. When not running she enjoys spending time with my two little boys, Ethan and William and husband Blake. On top of her busy household she has two crazy pugs , Ethel and Pearl and a shy kitty named Lucy.
