Internships
Our program goal is to ready you for success in a progressive emergency and critical care practice, general practice, or residency programs. We are committed to developing critical and independent thinking, helping to refine client interaction, and introduce you to management of a veterinary facility. We encourage you to visit our facility to directly experience our hospital and all we have to offer. If you cannot visit, please contact one of the persons listed to learn more about how our program may be a good match for your career plans.

The focus of our program is in emergency and critical care, but our interns are not just ER grunts working the late night emergency shifts. You gain exposure working with all our in-house and ancillary services including internal medicine, radiology, critical care, surgery, cardiology, and ophthalmology.

Our interns are supported by staff at numerous levels of training and expertise. Our interns work hand-in-hand with our staff ER and critical care doctors. Our staff doctors have over 80 years combined clinical experience to assist you. You will work with experienced, licensed technicians and assistants in the ER and ICU. You daily work is combined with consultations and rotations with our multiple specialists. Didactic rounds are presented on a regular basis to round out your training. Our caseload will keep you challenged and provide a strong foundation for your veterinary career.

Primary application is made through the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program. Should you be interested in applying for our program, please forward your cover letter outlining your career goals and intention with our program, your curriculum vitae, the VIRMP Application form, your transcripts, and three letters of recommendation.

Applicants must be eligible for licensure in Virginia and matched interns must obtain their license before July 1 of the starting year of their internship.

We evaluate each applicant based on their intentions, academic performance, past and current activities, and professional recommendations. Weight is given to enthusiastic, energetic individuals who enjoy working with clients and have performed well in an academic environment.

Our program starts mid-June with an orientation program that allows you a smooth transition into our hospital.

Upon acceptance to our program, we will send applicants information on Virginia licensure and housing options in the surrounding communities. Interns receive a salary and reimbursement for health insurance, liability insurance, and state licensing fees.

Externships
The Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center participates in externship programs with fourth year veterinary students from numerous colleges. Externships are scheduled by the student and involve two to four weeks of hands on experience. Students are encouraged to rotate through the various services such as emergency medicine, critical care, internal medicine, radiology, cardiology, dermatology, and ophthalmology. Students can opt to participate in emergency medicine only if their goal is to gain perspective on after hours care.

The purpose of the externships is to allow future veterinarians the opportunity to gain as much exposure as possible before entering clinical practice. Interested students must contact the Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center and also obtain approval from their respective college of veterinary medicine.

Once the students arrive at the VESC they will be assigned an emergency medicine clinician to mentor them through their externship. Students are not graded but evaluations are sent to their academic adviser. The VESC limits participants in the externship to only one student at a time to allow the student as much in depth exposure as possible.

If you are interested in an intern or extern position in our hospital please forward all inquiries to Dr. Nate Lippo 804-353-9271 fax or Nathan.Lippo@animal-emergency.com
